Functional Dry Needling in Lincoln
Horizon Physical Therapy is now offering Functional Dry Needling (FDN). Our physical therapist, Shane Jansa, is now certified in FDN from KinetaCore. KinetaCore’s FDN course gives clinicians the tools to elevate their practice to a new level of patient care. Shane Jansa has been in private practice for 20 years and has owned his own clinic for 13 years. He has experience working with patients that have chronic pain, gait disorders, and neurological diseases. He is a certified strength and conditioning specialist through the National Strength & Conditioning Association.
Shane uses manual techniques to identify the trigger point, or source of pain. The small monofilament needle is advanced into the area to elicit a brief, involuntary twitch response to relax the muscle. A twitch response or deep ache may be felt around the needle. Patients may soon learn to recognize and even welcome this sensation as it results in deactivating the trigger point, thereby reducing pain and restoring normal function of the muscle. This treatment can eliminate pain, muscle tightness, and reduce referred pain. Dry needling is not acupuncture, a practice based on traditional Chinese medicine and performed by acupuncturists. Dry needling is part of modern Western medicine principles, and supported by research. This technique uses a “dry” needle, one without medication or injection, to treat myofascial pain. Unlike having an injection, most patients do not feel the insertion of the needle.
At Horizon Physical Therapy, the training in Functional Dry Needling® (FDN) emphasizes application of dry needling for the purpose of restoring function. We believe the physical therapist’s greatest asset is their knowledge and ability to assess, treat, and enhance movement. Functional movement is a goal for every patient to achieve and the properly trained physical therapist is perfectly positioned to guide and hasten the patient’s journey to healthy movement.
